THE SRI LANKA SCHOOL OF PROSTHETICS AND ORTHOTICS: SLSPO

A short documentary about the Sri Lanka School of Prosthetics & Orthotics, founded by the Cambodia Trust, the Nippon Foundation and the Sri Lanka Ministry of Healthcare and Nutrition. The school trains Sri Lankans from across the country to be prosthetist/orthotists - specialists who prescribe and fit artificial limbs and orthopaedic braces for people with disabilities.

The Sri Lankan School of Prosthetics and Orthotics (SLSPO), funded by The Nippon Foundation and based on a partnership between Exceed Worldwide and the Sri Lanka Ministry of Healthcare and Nutrition was established in 2004.

It was based on the model pioneered by Exceed in Cambodia and enabled Sri Lanka students to train as internationally-accredited Prosthetist Orthotists at International Society of Prosthetics and Orthotics Category II level. It also provides comprehensive physical rehabilitation services to those most in need at a physical rehabilitation clinic.

SLSPO was the first of 4 new P&O Schools established as part of a Strategic Plan to create a P&O sector in Southeast Asia and Sri Lanka, devised by Exceed and The Nippon Foundation.

This Strategy envisaged a ten-year period of support, development and management for each new School, with local agencies taking responsibility for management at the end of the ten year development period.

This process was completed successfully and responsibility for management of SLSPO passed to the Sri Lankan Ministry of Healthcare and Nutrition in 2014.

Exceed retains an interest in the development of the School and aims to offer support for future collaborations.
