Why was it established?

In many countries – and especially in lower and middle income countries (LMICs) – there is a huge gap between the need for Prosthetic and Orthotic (P&O) services and the availability of both clinicians and services. Unless there is dramatic change this situation will persist.

We call this the P&O Health Challenge and Exceed Social Enterprises (ESE) was launched in 2015 to address this challenge.

The Concept

ESE is a unique, strategic, market-led, assistive technology initiative. It tests the concept that the Prosthetics and Orthotics (P&O) sector in LMICs can move from what is often a charitable model, dependent on recurring support, to a position of self-reliance and a self-sustaining future.

Exceed believes social enterprise, business principles, innovative thinking and new cross-sector partnerships can address the P&O Health Challenge.  This is not a shot in the dark, as the decision to launch ESE was led by research, socio-economic change and market development in Southeast Asia – e.g. growing wealth, the rapid emergence of a middle class, ageing populations and changing lifestyles leading to an increase in the level of non-communicable diseases, like diabetes and cardio-vascular conditions.
